Barunga Village Opens 25-Year Time Capsule

On Thursday 23 April, Barunga Village welcomed House Members, past and present staff, Board Members, community representatives and guests to celebrate the opening of a time capsule buried more than 25 years ago.

Originally placed in December 2000 alongside the opening of the Barunga Homes extension, the time capsule captured a snapshot of the organisation, preserving the people, stories and spirit of Barunga Village at that time.

The contents were carefully selected by then Chairperson Gloria Edwards, offering a meaningful glimpse into the past. From invitations and plans for the extension, to thank you letters, meeting minutes, photos of staff and Board Members, and an edition of the Port Broughton Echo, each item reflects the people and community behind the organisation’s growth.

Guests were warmly welcomed by Elizabeth Carroll, Chief Executive Officer, with Kerrin March (Jingo), Board Chairperson guiding the morning.

Former Director of Nursing and later Chief Executive Officer Merrilyn Hewett shared powerful reflections on Barunga Homes in its beginnings, describing a close-knit and deeply connected community. She spoke of both the challenges and determination at the time, highlighting the dedication of those who worked tirelessly to support the organisation’s growth.

Long-serving Board Member Juan Elliot also reflected on the organisation’s beginnings, reinforcing the importance of strong governance, community backing and shared purpose.

The event also acknowledged the contributions of former Director of Business Operations, Maureen Coffey and former Chairperson, Gloria Edwards, whose combined leadership and vision helped shape Barunga Village into what it is today.

Kate Manser, Director of Residential Services reflected on the organisation’s journey over the past 25 years and the culture that continues to guide its care.

“What we have today did not happen by accident,” Kate shared. “It has been shaped by the vision, courage and care of those who came before us. We benefit from that every day.”

She highlighted Barunga Village’s continued commitment to person-centred care through the Butterfly Approach and its focus on supporting people to live the best life possible.

Member for Grey, Tom Venning MP also attended the event, acknowledging the importance of Barunga Village to the region and the strong community spirit that has supported its development.

The opening of the time capsule was not only a chance to rediscover the past, but also a celebration of the people and community who continue to shape Barunga Village today.
